About the artist...
Étienne Trouvelot (1827 – 1895) was a French artist, astronomer and amateur entomologist.
Along with his talent for capturing the iridescent night sky, Trouvelot is largely noted for unwittingly releasing the European gypsy moth into North America after trying to rear them in the forest behind his house - a highly unfortunate incident that has caused irreparable damage to America's ecosystem.
He then turned to astronomy and was invited to take up residency at the US Naval Observatory. During this time he developed over 7000 astronomical illustrations, which were later published by illustrious New York publisher Scribner's in 1881.
